The economy of the municipality depends, to a large extent, on activities related to the sea and the commercialisation of catches. The fishing port is the most commercial port on the Costa da Morte, mainly for species such as sardines and octopus. It also has a fishermen's guild, a collective of shellfish and goose barnacle gatherers, as well as one of the most traditional canneries on the Costa da Morte, the Cerdeimar Group, and companies that produce and process octopus, seaweed and shellfish.
