HERMITAGE OF VIRXE DO MONTE

HERMITAGE OF VIRXE DO MONTE

Discover an 18th century Baroque chapel located on a promontory with panoramic views of the Vilán lighthouse and Punta da Barca. It is famous for its Easter...
This chapel is located on the outskirts of the town, on a promontory of great scenic value from which Punta da Barca (Muxía) and the Vilán lighthouse can be seen. Baroque in style (18th century), it has a ground plan divided into two sections with a choir and a lateral annex (narthex) on the south wall. The simple, symmetrical façade, without decoration, has a simple belfry with a single span formed by a semicircular arch. During the Easter Monday pilgrimage, the image of the Virgin is carried in procession from Camariñas to the chapel, where it goes around the church three times. According to tradition, a candle is lit in front of the image when a person is absent so that the Virgin, who according to legend appeared in the sea, remembers what was offered. Testimony to these rituals are the votive offerings of boats that appear in the enclosure.
