CHURCH OF SANTA MARIÑA, SANTA MARIÑA DE TOSTO

CHURCH OF SANTA MARIÑA, SANTA MARIÑA DE TOSTO

Visit this ancient centre of Christianisation, famous for its connection with water and fertility cults. Admire its triumphal arch and neoclassical altarpiece.
On the site where this church now stands was the monastery in honour of San Bieito - the black monks - of Santa Mariña de Tosto, which was rebuilt twice. It is considered one of the oldest centres of Christianisation in these lands. The location of this secluded place may have been related to the Christianisation of a pagan cult, to a natural element or to fertility, as Santa Mariña was a legendary martyr from Antioch who symbolised water cults and favoured harvests. Of the primitive building, only the triumphal arch of access to the main altar remains inside, formed by a semicircular arch supported by semi-columns with vegetal capitals, which follow the models that the silversmiths used in the transept of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, and which are the most common in the area. These patterns are repeated in Santa María de Xaviña, Santiago de Cereixo and San Pedro de Leis. The altarpiece, made of polychrome wood, is neoclassical in style.
